Getting Married in Banff: Moraine Lake, Lake Minnewanka and Early Mornings

November 5, 2026

Banff makes everything feel more cinematic

Banff is pure magic, and every time I’m there as a wedding photographer I’m reminded why: towering peaks, glacial lakes, and a stillness that settles into your bones. It’s the kind of place that makes everything feel a little more sacred and a little more cinematic.

Whether you’re saying your vows by a turquoise lake or tucked into an alpine meadow, your wedding here becomes more than a moment. It becomes a feeling. I’ll be there to capture it with honesty and heart, so you can hold onto that mountain magic forever.

From mountaintops to clear blue lakes, I blend honest candids with editorial portraits, so your photos feel elevated and uniquely yours.

Featured Banff wedding: Colby + Frankie

Lake Minnewanka · October

Photographing this Banff wedding felt like stepping into a dream carved out of the mountains. With only their closest people by their side, the day was calm, intentional, and full of heart. The stillness of the lake, the fresh mountain air, and the towering peaks set the stage for something truly special.

After the ceremony, they shared a slow evening with their people: good food, meaningful speeches, and the kind of joy that doesn’t need an agenda. Nothing was rushed. It was love, warmth, and the mountains standing witness, the kind of celebration that lingers long after the day is done. They finished with an adventure session at Moraine Lake.

Where I’ve photographed in Banff National Park

Moraine Lake

I don’t think any photo can fully prepare you for how beautiful Moraine Lake is in person. The colour of the water almost looks fake, and having those massive mountains surrounding you makes it one of the most incredible places to photograph. It’s popular for a reason, and absolutely worth the early morning wake-up call.

Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka has such a different feel from some of the other lakes in Banff. The wide open views, rocky shoreline and mountains stretching into the distance make it an incredible location for couples who want those dramatic mountain photos without needing a big hike. There are so many hidden spots around the lake if you want to avoid the crowds.

Lake Louise

Lake Louise is one of those places you’ve probably seen photographed a thousand times, but seeing it with your own eyes is something else. Between the turquoise water, Victoria Glacier and mountains surrounding the lake, it’s hard to find a bad angle. I’d always recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds but sunset is just as beautiful.

Vermilion Lakes

One of my favourite things about Vermilion Lakes is how peaceful it can feel compared to some of Banff’s busier locations. The reflections of Mount Rundle on the water are absolutely beautiful, especially around sunset. It’s the perfect place to slow down and take your time with photos.

Mount Norquay

Mount Norquay is such an underrated spot for photos in Banff. I love that you can get those incredible mountain views without having to hike for hours. It’s a beautiful option for couples who want the mountains to be a huge part of their photos while still keeping their session relaxed and easy. This is a spot you want to visit early in the morning but there are almost never any crowds here which makes it such a great spot to add to the list of musts!

My Banff-specific advice for engaged couples

  • Early mornings are ALWAYS worth it. If you’re planning to elope somewhere like Moraine Lake or Lake Louise, I cannot recommend an early morning session enough. These locations get incredibly busy, and getting there before the crowds makes such a difference. Plus, watching the sun come up over the mountains is an experience in itself.
  • Don’t underestimate mountain weather. One thing I’ve learned about photographing in the Rockies is that the weather can change SO quickly. You can have sunshine one minute and rain or snow the next, even during the summer months. I always recommend having some flexibility in your plans and bringing layers, regardless of the season.
  • You don’t need to hike for hours to get incredible photos. One of the biggest misconceptions about eloping in Banff is that you need to hike up a mountain in your wedding dress to get those incredible views. Some of my favourite locations are accessible with very little walking. You can have the mountains as your backdrop without turning your wedding day into a full workout.
  • Look into permits before planning your ceremony. Banff is a national park, which means there are rules surrounding weddings and professional photography. I always recommend looking into Parks Canada requirements before getting attached to a specific ceremony location. The last thing you want is to plan your entire day around a spot only to find out there are restrictions you weren’t aware of.

Booking a Banff wedding photographer: what to know

Travel is included in your package price, so you aren’t booking flights or working out where I’m staying.

I can help you find hidden gems or trusted local contacts if you need them.

Most destination couples book twelve to twenty-four months out.

Ask me where I’ll already be that year. Sometimes the dates line up and it saves you a significant amount.
